ICAR-Central Tuber Crops Research Institute (ICAR-CTCRI), Thiruvananthapuram, organized an awareness programme on "Soil Health Management and Balanced Use of Fertilizers" under the Khet Bachao Abhiyan (Save the Farm Campaign) on 30 June 2026 at Thiruvallam Krishi Bhavan, Neyyattinkara Block, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala.
The programme was inaugurated by Dr. V. P. Vipitha, Agriculture Officer, in the presence of Shri P. Gopakumar, Ward Councillor, Thiruvallam Ward. In her inaugural address, Dr. Vipitha emphasized the importance of soil health management, balanced fertilizer use, and the contributions of ICAR-CTCRI towards sustainable agriculture.
The technical sessions were delivered by Dr. R. Muthuraj, Principal Scientist and Team Leader, and Dr. Asha K. I., Principal Scientist, Division of Crop Improvement, ICAR-CTCRI. The resource persons highlighted the objectives of the Khet Bachao Abhiyan, emphasizing soil test-based nutrient management, integrated nutrient management, Soil Health Card utilization, the 4Rs of nutrient stewardship, correction of soil acidity through liming, and the importance of balanced fertilizer application for improving soil fertility, crop productivity, and environmental sustainability. Organic farming, natural farming, and tuber crop-based value addition were also discussed.
Quality planting materials of cassava variety Sree Reksha and sweet potato variety Bhu Krishna were distributed to the participating farmers.
The programme was supported by Dr. N. Krishnaradhika, Senior Scientist, Shri Hareesh B. T., Technical Assistant (Farm), ICAR-CTCRI, and officials of Thiruvallam Krishi Bhavan. An interactive session enabled farmers to clarify their queries on fertilizer use, soil testing, and sustainable nutrient management practices.
A total of 163 farmers (120 women and 43 men) participated in the programme. The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Shri Hareesh B. T., Technical Assistant (Farm), ICAR-CTCRI, who expressed gratitude to all the participants and stakeholders for their active support.
