Shri. Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, Hon’ble Governor of Kerala inaugurated 62nd Foundation Day Celebrations of ICAR-Central Tuber Crops Research Institute at its Thiruvananthapuram centre. While addressing the gathering, he emphasized the growing importance of Natural Farming as a sustainable agricultural practice; all the innovations and research results should reach the farmers and should have a human touch. Tuber crops can be an important component in doubling farmers income. The Governor lauded the achievements of CTCRI stating that the institute has made commendable contribution in the field of tuber crops during the last 62 years.
Dr. Sanjay Behari, Director, Sree Chitra Thirunal Institute for Medical Sciences & Technology (SCTIMST), Thiruvananthapuram offered the special address and mentioned the crucial role of food in maintaining gut microbiota and gut health “our second brain.” According to him, tuber crops hold great promise for the development of functional foods and medicinal products. He also highlighted the collaboration of SCTIMST with ICAR-CTCRI to develop starch-based scaffolds for controlled drug delivery, technology that could have significant impact in the pharmaceutical industry.
Dr. G. Byju, Director, ICAR-CTCRI highlighted the research achievements of the institute. He underscored the achievements during last year viz., 5 new varieties, 5 novel technologies for commercialisation, 11 technologies for ICAR certification, 29 external aided projects, publication in high rated journals and the ‘outstanding’ rating given by the ICAR appointed quinquennial review team for the period 2019-24.
Governor of Kerala released new publications, honoured progressive tuber crop farmers, meritorious staff and students. Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) aimed at furthering collaborative research with Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences & Technology, Thiruvananthapuram; Vedanta Limited, Lanjigarh, Odisha and PRS Hospital, Thiruvananthapuram, were exchanged in his presence.
Dr. G. Suja, Head, Crop Production extended a warm welcome to the distinguished guests and attendees. The celebration witnessed participation from farmers, students, and both former and current staff of the institute, officials from line departments, KVKs etc. to make it a truly inclusive and celebratory occasion.
The event also showcased institute released varieties, technologies, value added products and publications.
