A proud moment to ICAR-CTCRI as the Honourable Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, Shri Ram Nath Thakur visits the Institute
The Honourable Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, Shri Ram Nath Thakur, visited the ICAR–Central Tuber Crops Research Institute (CTCRI), Thiruvananthapuram, on 06 January 2026 and interacted with the scientists about the ongoing research and development initiatives aimed at strengthening farmers’ livelihoods.
Addressing a gathering of scientists, Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) staff, and farmers, the Minister emphasized the pivotal role of agricultural research institutions in ensuring food and nutritional security. He underlined the importance of frequent interactions between farmers and scientists to better understand farmers’ needs and field-level challenges. The Minister appreciated the Institute’s significant contributions in developing improved varieties and farmer-friendly technologies, particularly in tropical root and tuber crops. He also stressed the need to create greater awareness among farmers about various central government schemes to enable the farmers to avail maximum benefits.
Dr G. Byju, Director, ICAR–CTCRI, briefed the Minister on the Institute’s major achievements and future research plans. He highlighted the importance of launching a National Tuber Crops Mission, noting that tuber crops are climate-resilient and have immense potential in contributing to the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047.
As part of the programme, progressive farmers Shri L. G. Gopakumar (Parassala), Shri Rajan (Poovakuddy), and Shri R. Raveendran (Uloor) were honoured by the Minister for their outstanding contributions to tuber crops cultivation.
During the visit, the Minister interacted with scientists and KVK staff and appreciated the Institute’s sustained efforts in advancing tuber crops research. The Minister visited the Techno Incubation Centre and the dairy unit, which forms part of the Institute’s integrated farming systems research.
An exhibition showcasing innovative technologies, improved varieties, and farmer-friendly practices developed by ICAR–CTCRI was organized as part of the visit. More than fifty progressive farmers, extension officials, and representatives from KVKs participated in the interactive session. The Honourable Minister assured continued support from the Government of India for strengthening agricultural research and promoting farmer-centric innovations.
