The ICAR–Central Tuber Crops Research Institute, Thiruvananthapuram, successfully organized a three-day Hands-on Orientation Training Programme on Standard Operating Procedures and Techniques for Soil Analysis from 4–6 August 2026. The programme was conducted for 11 staff members, comprising attenders and assistants working in soil testing laboratories under the Department of Agriculture Development and Farmers’ Welfare, Government of Kerala.
The training programme was designed to familiarize the participants with the standard operating procedures followed in soil testing laboratories, covering every stage from soil sample collection and processing to laboratory analysis, recording of results, and preparation of soil test reports with appropriate recommendations for farmers.
The three-day programme included extensive hands-on training sessions on soil sample collection, processing, and proper labeling; preparation of reagents for the estimation of various soil parameters; determination of soil texture using the feel method; and familiarization with laboratory apparatus, glassware, and equipments. As most of the participants were attending such a training programme for the first time in their career, special emphasis was placed on introducing them to the principles, operation, and safe handling of laboratory instruments to strengthen their understanding of soil analytical procedures.
In his presidential address, Dr. G. Byju, Director, ICAR-CTCRI, emphasized the importance of capacity-building programmes for technical support staff working in soil testing laboratories. He highlighted that strengthening the skills of frontline laboratory personnel through such professional training initiatives would enhance the quality and reliability of soil testing services, ultimately enabling the delivery of accurate soil health recommendations to farmers for improved crop growth and productivity.
Dr. G. Suja, Head, Division of Crop Production, encouraged the trainees to effectively apply the knowledge and practical skills gained during the programme in their respective laboratories, thereby improving the efficiency and quality of soil analysis services.
